Funerary urn in the shape of a temple

This limestone urn was found in 1869 in the territory of Palestrina, inside a chest made of peperino stone. The urn contained the dead man’s ashes and vestiges of the gold decoration on his clothing. The chest contained the grave goods: a strigil with a handle shaped like a female figure (now at the British Museum), an engraved mirror (lost) and alabaster vase (lost). The tomb, dated to the end of the 4th century B.C., was surmounted by a limestone statue, of which only a short description in 19th-century reports has come down to us.
