The relief exemplifies a line of sculpture typical of the city of Palmyra, in Syria. The personages’ luxurious garments and their ostentation of jewelry are distinctive signs that the deceased belonged to the great families of the commercial oligarchy of Palmyra, a major hub for trade between East and West.
