Stele of Shemen
This stele shows the dead man seated holding a lotus flower. His wife and one daughter are in front of him; the other daughter is at his foot. Inscriptions alongside the personages identify them by their names, while the usual funerary formula is inscribed above.
Masterpieces of the hall
Nearly all the reliefs in the Barracco Museum’s collection belong to the funerary sphere.
They come from a type of tomb, the mastaba (from the Arabic word for bench), which was especially characteristic of Old Kingdom necropolises.
