This piece, found during the 19th-century excavations on the Viminal Hill in Rome, is a beautiful copy of a statue created by Phidias in the mid-5th century B.C. for the Acropolis in Athens. The best copy of Phidias’s statue is at the museum of Kassel, Germany. The sculpture has been recognized as the one dedicated by the Athenians to Parnopios Apollo in memory of his saving them from a plague of locusts.
