The head is solidly structured and tilted slightly to the left; the lips are slightly parted, the eyes are sunken in the sockets, the curly locks are cut short, the ears are the typically swollen ones of boxers. Comparisons with other sculptures make it possible to identify the subject as Hermes, in his role as protector of stadiums and gymnasiums. The work is a good Roman copy of a Greek original from the 4th century B.C.
